National Projects

THE PHOENIX RESOURCE CENTRE IS UNIQUE AND GROUND BREAKING.

It is not only our approach and way of working that makes Phoenix unique, but also our external projects and partnerships allow us to increase our impact through a range of workshops and activities. Our work with organisations such as The National Autistic charity, CANTO, as well as educational institutions, has enabled us to continue building on existing projects as well as undertaking new ones.

NORTHAMPTONSHIRE

Since our inception in 2009, and as a registered charity from 2010 we have continued to grow at a rapid rate. Since 2011 we have taken up to 550+ tonnes of resources per week at our warehouse facilities, these are all usable resources that would otherwise be sent to UK landfill sites.

From our distribution centre we are able to supply food and medical supplies; our resources are also used in education, rehabilitation, crafts and creative play; with a primary focus of youth, the elderly, disabled and disadvantaged groups.

Our projects in Northamptonshire:

  • Resource Centre

  • International Aid Depot

  • Secure Destruction

  • Restorative Justice

  • Food Hub

  • Community Engagement Programmes

  • Education Projects with Schools

  • Employability For Long-term Unemployed

  • Phoenix Employability and Disability Support Services (Including our partnership projects with Canto, National Autistic Society)

High levels of methane gas and carbon dioxide are generated by waste in landfill sites, these have detrimental affects on both the environment and the economy.

The UK generated 222.2 million tonnes of total waste in 2018, with England responsible for 84% of the UK total.

In 2019, total ‘waste from households’ increased to 22.1 million tonnes.

Phoenix Community Shop

The Community Shop is a social community enterprise that has been central in the re-distribution of items and goods. Through the support of socially community conscious companies, local council and The Harvey Centre we’ve been able to establish our place in the heart of Harlow. The community shop provides customers with household brands and items at real everyday affordable prices.

As a non-profit, the funds generated through the community shop have been used to seed projects:

  • Love Harlow Radio Station

  • Phoenix Live

  • Community Kitchen

  • In The Making

Phoenix Live

Corresponding with our principles in the provision of resources, Phoenix Live is an extension to our organisation that offers a different dynamic to our ongoing projects.

Phoenix Live is platform for grassroots artists and musicians from the community to gain experience performing live in front of an audience. In addition to this, it provides a great insight into the overall production of an event.

A diverse range of musical talent graces the stage every weekend. Not only is this a great space to connect with more members of the community, it’s also a self-sustainable arm of our charity that allows us to expand on the groundbreaking work we’re doing.

In The Making 2016-2023

In the making was an exciting partnership between Phoenix resource centre and Harlow college supported studies. We supplied surplus craft resources and recyclable supplies, to be used by college students with additional needs to learn, providing development in a creative and enjoyable way. The students build confidence in relationship skills, life skills and self esteem. Which contributes to the additional needs learners pursuit on their path into paid employment or further their learning at their own pace.

A new an exciting community project is being planned. Watch this space for further details.

“Creating a community around food”

The Phoenix Community Kitchen is the initial stage of a larger social community enterprise. The community kitchen uses a combination of purchased produce and surplus food, supplies and products to provide free breakfast to anyone who needs it; and has the ultimate objective of developing a self-sustaining community social enterprise hub around food. It’s a space that is open to all who may need or want to grab a free breakfast provision. Its immediate aim is to address a rising need in the Harlow Community to help with the cost of living crisis and community cohesion. Increasing real engagement, bringing down barriers and creating social integration across the breadth of the community. The long-term objective is provide members of the local community the opportunity to gain employment through several independent food vendor community enterprises, operating together as a public food court.

The Community Kitchen project operates Thursday - Saturday 8:30-10:00 for Breakfasts.

We also serve an affordable lunch offer 12:00 - 14:00 subject to availability.

Phoenix Harlow Youth Hub

An initial 13-week pilot programme for ages 12-17 offering a safe space to socialise and engage in recreational activities i.e table sports, craft, board games. Food and refreshments provided to all atendees.

UK Knitting Projects working with Phoenix Resource Centre – giving a helping hand around the world.

Over the last 6 years, Phoenix has been blessed to work with many groups and individuals around the UK who generously donate and knit clothes and blankets and make dress and short sets which has enabled us to help tens of thousands of babies and children around the world and especially East Africa.

Through a small and dedicated team of volunteers, some who also knit and make the clothes sets, the items are collected together, often posted or delivered to our collectors who then bring them into our warehouse where they are sorted and boxed ready to be placed on to an Aid container, or Aid lorry as with the case of Eastern Europe and Asia.

Whilst most of the clothes have been sent to their original intended destinations of Djibouti, Somaliland and Kenya - helping tens of thousands of families from the most deprived areas in East Africa, we have been able to help the Afghan refugees in Essex, via a joint project with the community policing and home office which helped around 100 families with clothes and other resources.
